Title:  Sr Cobol Application Support Analyst

The Opportunity 

 

We are looking for a very experienced mainframe developer/support analyst pref. with production support experience to help us in core rail operations/production support and transformation work (no new development needed). 

 

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities​ 

 

We need you to ensure: 

  • Support of mainframe applications owned by both Worldline and other organisations and which have been an integral part of the UK rail industry for 30+ years 

  • Availability of mainframe applications by fixing bugs and applying maintenance changes such that applications continue to deliver to the agreed SLAs and meet the high expectations of the customers 

  • Provision of on call support outside normal UK office hours 

 

We need you to build: 

  • Relationships with support teams in the customer organisations in the UK rail industry 

  • You develop...  

  • Solutions to incidents raised by customers 

  • Solutions to failures in the production service 

  • Small enhancements to the applications 

  • Larger enhancements related to rejuvenation of service 

  • Standard changes 

  • Majority of the applications are written in COBOL (both batch and CICS) and run under JCL. There may be opportunities to participate in support of applications written in Assembler (and a bespoke Assembler language called ‘TOPSTRAN’) 

 

We need you to run:  

  • Responsible for participating in 24x7x365 support of applications 

  • Taking personal responsibility for all tasks in the resolution of incidents and problems 

  • Participation in all tasks in the enhancement/development lifecycle (e.g. functional specification, technical specification, code and unit test, system test, support of User Acceptance Test, implementation planning, Implementation) under the guidance of a team leader/project manager. (Though ability to work in these areas without specific guidance would be considered a valuable asset) 

  • Analysis of potential changes to the applications. These may be minor enhancements or larger scale developments involved in the rejuvenation of the application stack 

  • Clear and informative documentation of all tasks 

  • Produce and contribute to the documented knowledge base 

  • Work with and clearly communicate to customers in both enhancements projects and in response to incidents / problems and changes 

  • Participate with on call duties 

  • Participate in setting best practices, standards, and processes 

  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by Manager 

 

 

Who Are We Looking For

You have profound (minimum 12+ years) experience in an 3rd Level Application Technical Support role working with complex applications which are coded in: 

  • mainframe COBOL, CICS, JCL in an IBM Z/OS mainframe environment  

  • Experience working in Adabas and NATURAL 

 

You have sophisticated skills in:

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team 

  • Fluent English skills 

  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders on a day to day basis via telephone and email in a clear, courteous and professional manner 

  • Capability to analyse complex COBOL programs and provide a description of the functionality represented by the code 

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering to tight deadlines under pressure without supervision. Particularly in a 24x7x365 support environment 

  • Awareness and appreciation of potential functional/technical/commercial implications of issues or decisions that are being made, and the ability to clearly explain these to the Customer 

  • Analytical ability in being able to resolve incidents and clearly document both the root cause and the steps taken to ameliorate the cause
