The Opportunity
As the Head of Legal Benelux, reporting to the Deputy Group Legal Operations, you will lead and develop the legal team across Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. You will serve as the principal legal advisor for all business lines of Worldline legal entities in Benelux, including regulated entities. You will provide strategic and tactical legal direction and safeguard Worldline's interests under Belgian, Dutch, Luxembourgish and EU law. You will also ensure regulatory compliance and enable business growth across Benelux in alignment with Worldline's group standards and policies.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Leadership and governance
- Lead, develop, and mentor the Benelux legal team across all three countries: set strategy and tactics, manage performance, plan budgets and foster professional growth
- Drive cross-border collaboration and ensure a coherent legal approach across Benelux
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, trust, and loyalty; manage succession planning and professional development within the team
Contract management
- Lead the negotiation, drafting, and review of contracts with clients, vendors, and partners across Benelux, ensuring protection of Worldline's financial interests and risk management
- Implement strategies to mitigate legal and commercial risks; ensure compliance with group standards and applicable local and EU regulations
- Ensure availability and updates of standard contract templates for commercial and technical teams; manage multi-jurisdictional implications
Regulatory & compliance liaison
- Support the group on regulatory and compliance matters, coordinating and contributing to interactions with local authorities and regulators
- Oversee communications, contribute to answers to regulatory inquiries, and ensure timely responses across Benelux
- Promote a culture of legal compliance across Benelux and coordinate with the Compliance and FCC functions
M&A and strategic support
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide legal guidance supporting business objectives and strategic initiatives across Benelux
- Contribute to local due diligence, integration planning, and corporate development activities
- Support joint venture reviews and strategic partnerships in the Benelux markets
Corporate governance
- Advise boards of directors and executive management of all Benelux legal entities on legal matters, governance issues, and compliance strategies
- Assist with governance materials, board processes, and statutory obligations under applicable local laws
- Provide corporate secretarial support across Benelux
Dispute resolution
- Oversee and manage legal disputes or litigation involving Worldline entities in Benelux; coordinate with external counsel and drive favourable outcomes
- Manage legal budgets and risk mitigation strategies across the three jurisdictions
Policy development and risk management
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to promote adherence to regulatory standards across Benelux
- Establish and maintain legal risk management processes, including risk registers and escalation procedures
Market awareness
- Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and the competitive landscape across the Benelux payments sector
- Negotiate and review payment scheme agreements, advise on payment scheme strategies and provide assistance in connection with Worldline's attendance at relevant payment scheme committees
- Provide proactive, actionable legal advice to maintain Worldline's competitive edge in Benelux
Data protection and privacy
- Coordinate data protection initiatives across Benelux in collaboration with the DPO Office to ensure GDPR compliance and effective incident response
Training and knowledge management
- Design and deliver internal training on legal topics relevant to the Benelux business operations
- Contribute to the knowledge base of the legal function across Benelux
Who Are We Looking For
We look for big thinkers. People who can drive positive change, step up and show what's next – people with passion, can-do attitude and a hunger to learn and grow. In practice this means:
- Master's degree (LLM or equivalent) with qualification to practise in at least one of the Belgian, Dutch or Luxembourgish jurisdictions
- Excellent written and spoken English; Dutch and French proficiency highly desirable for coordination across Benelux
- 10-15 years of international or multi-market legal experience, including significant leadership responsibilities managing teams across several countries and/or within the payments market
- Strong knowledge of Belgian, Dutch and/or Luxembourgish corporate law, commercial contracts, dispute resolution, data protection (GDPR), and regulatory matters
- Experience in payments, financial services, or regulated industries is highly desirable
- Outstanding negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills with proven strategic thinking and practical problem-solving abilities
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate multi-jurisdictional legal teams whilst managing competing priorities
- Proactive, resilient, solution-oriented approach with strong stakeholder management skills and ability to influence at all organisational levels
- Willingness to travel across Benelux and to other Worldline offices as required
